You just need to load your bibliographical information to Zotero, connect it to the writing software of your choice (Word, Open Office, Google Drive, or via a bibtex file to LaTeX or R Markdown), and insert the citations by looking up the right entry. Systematic application of rules like a citation style and perfect recollection of metadata is where automatic systems and databases excel -and that is exactly what Zotero offers. But it doesn’t have to be you, nor do you need to hire a student: use a reference manager! Anyone can do this job, as long as they have the right information, a lot of attention to detail, systematicity and nothing better to do with their time and energy.

After all, as long as you know what you’re citing and how to integrate other voices into your words (which only you can do), the rest are formalities. This was not entirely unexpected: it was precisely because of this natural lack of systematicity -our human fluidity, our creativity, our other focuses- that these researchers preferred to hire a student to exclusively take care of these formalities rather than doing it themselves. Sometimes citations didn’t have a corresponding reference at the end, or some references had never been cited. Neither did the references at the end, where information was sometimes missing or even wrong. Only when you paid attention did you notice that the citations did not follow a coherent style: mixes of (Familyname 2021:page), (Familyname, 2021 p.page) and all possible combinations. I would receive a Word file with the finished paper, sparkled with citations and followed by the usual references section.
When I was a student at the university, I was hired by a few researchers to take care of the citations and references of papers they had to submit. We hope to rescue many academics from the tedious task of compiling a bibliography manually. We’ll start with some personal anecdotes and finish with tips from our collective experience. We want to share our view, our experience and our tips on bibliography managers, with a focus on Zotero, because that’s the one we use and it’s free, open source software (other reference managers are certainly good as well!).
